A guide
How to become a Pilates instructor in the UK
Becoming a Pilates instructor starts with a Level 3 Matwork qualification and builds from there. This is the route in plain terms: what you need before you start, what the training involves, how the apparatus courses follow, and what it costs.
The short answer
- First step: Level 3 Pilates Matwork.
- Entry: A regular Pilates practice, and aged 18 or over.
- Cost: from £1,495 for Matwork. Prices are the full price. No VAT is added.
- Then: Reformer, Tower and Chair, each needing your Matwork qualification.
The route
Seven steps, in the order they happen
Step 01
Build your own practice
Training providers expect you to practise Pilates yourself before you teach it, so that you know the repertoire in your own body. For our Matwork course you need a regular Pilates practice and to be aged 18 or over.
Step 02
Qualify in Level 3 Matwork
A Level 3 Matwork qualification is the foundation of a Pilates teaching career and the entry requirement for all apparatus training.
Step 03
Check who accredits the course
Ask any provider who accredits and endorses the qualification you will receive. Ours is accredited by YMCA and endorsed by CIMSPA for Matwork.
Step 04
Study and train
Our blended learning combines study in your own time through the learner portal, with face-to-face workshops in our Poole studios where you learn to plan, deliver and evaluate Pilates sessions.
Step 05
Be assessed and certified
You are assessed and, on successful completion, certified. Completion depends on passing your assessment and is not guaranteed.
Step 06
Insure yourself and start teaching
Before you teach independently you will need your own public liability insurance. You can then teach matwork classes and one-to-one clients.
Step 07
Add the apparatus
Reformer, Tower and Chair qualifications let you teach in an equipment studio. Each apparatus course asks for your Level 3 Matwork qualification first.
